Volunteer and Educational Opportunities

We welcome the Pikes Peak Community College Science of Zoo Keeping Technology students to Spirit Keeper Equine Sanctuary. They spend several days each semester working and learning about husbandry and behavior of equids to prepare them for careers at zoos and sanctuaries. These facilities often house a number of equids such as Zebra, Wild Asses, Mongolian Wild Horses, and domestic ponies and horses. Learning to care for horses is helpful in the general care of most ungulates (hoof-stock) both domestic and wild. The odd-toed ungulates (Perissodactyls) include horses, tapirs, and rhinos. Even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyls) include mammals such as cattle, pigs, giraffes, camels, deer, and hippopotamuses.

  • At Spirit Keeper students and volunteers get to have contact with horses, goats, and pigs!
  • In January 2018 we began accepting students from Pikes Peak Community College for working internship programs.
